Entering and Managing Race Results
This is where race day comes alive. The Results Screen is where you capture finish times and bib numbers, connect to external timing devices, and build the raw data that RunScore will transform into your final results and awards.
Accessing the Results Screen
- Click the Results button on the Master Menu.
- From the dropdown, select Time.
This opens the Results Screen for your main timing event.
What you'll see
The Results Screen has a clear, structured layout:
- Bib Number column — where you enter each finisher's bib
- Time column — where finish times appear (from a timer or manual entry)
- Select Times column — for a secondary source of times used for verification (such as chip times)
- Searchable database fields — the first several fields from your participant database (like name and age group) appear alongside each row as a quick reference
Preparing for a new race: clearing old data
Before your event — especially if you've done any testing — it's good practice to clear the Results Screen so you're starting with a clean slate.
- On the Results Screen, click the Init button.
- Select Initialize Results.
- You can choose Clear All to wipe every time, or select a specific event and click OK to clear just that one.
Starting with leftover test times in your results is a common mistake for new users. Always initialize your results before the gun goes off.
Entering finish times and bib numbers
When finishers start crossing the line, RunScore captures the flow of times into the Time column automatically (if connected to a timing clock) or you can type them manually. At this stage, bib numbers are not yet attached — you'll see a column of times with no associated names.
Next, you'll match times to participants by entering bib numbers:
- Scan bib tags using a barcode scanner, or
- Type bib numbers manually from paper stringer strips collected at the finish line
As you enter each bib, it lines up with the corresponding finish time, connecting each time to a participant in your database.
Using Select Times for accuracy
The Select Times column gives you a second set of reference data — typically chip times from your timing system. Comparing your main time column against your select times is a critical quality-control step: it helps you catch any bib-number mismatches or missed finishers before you generate results.
If you've recorded select times, pressing F6 on the Results Screen displays them alongside your main times for easy cross-referencing — without having to switch screens.
Connecting to external timers
RunScore integrates seamlessly with external timing devices such as a Time Machine or Summit Timer. These devices capture finish times electronically, eliminating manual time entry and reducing errors.
To connect an external timer:
- Connect your timing device to your computer via the appropriate cable or interface.
- On the Results Screen, click Init and select Initialize External Timers.
- RunScore will establish communication with the device.
Once connected, you can choose to:
- Download all times at once after the race finishes, or
- Stream times live as each finisher crosses the mat — great for large events where you want real-time data
Press F7 on the Results Screen to display names, age groups, or other database fields alongside your timing data. This helps you confirm bib matches on the fly.
Saving your work: data integrity matters
Losing results data mid-event is a timer's nightmare. RunScore makes it easy to protect your work:
- Save frequently using the save function while on the Results Screen
- Better yet, go to Preferences and enable Auto Save Results — you can set the interval as low as 1 minute without any noticeable impact on RunScore's performance
Instead of deleting a time or bib number that seems wrong, experienced timers typically add the correct time or bib alongside it and mark the entry appropriately. This preserves a complete, traceable record of everything that happened at the finish line — invaluable if a result is disputed after the event.
