Instant Print

Instant Print lets you print a receipt, label, or confirmation for the current participant directly from the Enter/Edit Names screen. RunScore reads a template file from the race folder and fills in that participant's data.

  1. Open the Enter/Edit Names screen and navigate to the participant.
  2. Press Ctrl+P to print using the default INSTPRNT template.

RunScore saves the record, processes the template, and sends the output to your default printer (or wherever the template's DESTINATION directs it).

Printer Dialog Box must be off

For Instant Print to work, you must turn off Printer Dialog Box in Preferences. Otherwise the print job is intercepted by the system dialog and may not reach the printer.

Use different print templates

Press Ctrl+A or Ctrl+B to use an alternate template file:

KeyTemplate file
Ctrl+PINSTPRNT
Ctrl+AINSTPRNT.A
Ctrl+BINSTPRNT.B

You can create up to 26 variants (INSTPRNT.A through INSTPRNT.Z) in the race folder.

If the template file does not exist, nothing happens (an error is logged internally but no dialog appears).

Template file format

Each template is a plain-text file in the race folder. Lines are interpreted as commands. The command name occupies columns 1–19. Column 20 is a separator and is discarded. The argument starts at column 21.

Sample template

Here is the INSTPRNT.A file from the 5K race template:

PRINTER CONTROL 27 69
LABELS
Field NO.
FIELD FIRST NAME
FIELD LAST NAME
LINE FEED 2
Message AGE:
FIELD AGE
Message Sex:
FIELD SEX
Message TShirt:
Field TSHIRT
LINE FEED 3

PRINTER CONTROL 27 69 sends ESC + E (reset) to the printer before output. LABELS trims trailing spaces from field values. The rest prints bib number, name, age, sex, and T-shirt size, separated by blank lines.

Supported commands

These commands are shared with the listing-file interpreter but behave slightly differently inside instprnt(). Where a full command reference exists, the command name links to it.

CommandInstant Print notes
DESTINATIONLabel Printer (default) or Clipboard only. A filename does not write a file — use DESTINATION APPEND for that.
DESTINATION APPENDOnly way to write Instant Print output to a file.
FONT NAME
FONT SIZEDefault 12. If present with no or invalid argument, defaults to 6.
ORIENTATIONOnly landscape is honored; anything else is portrait.
LABELSTrims trailing spaces on fields. Does not enable listing-style label sheets.
FIELD
MESSAGE
LINE FEED
SPACE
HEADEROne-shot text block until a . line; not a repeating page header.
FORM FEED AT ENDInserts a form-feed at the current position.
PRINTER CONTROL
TIME FORMATApplies to EVENT values (results context only).

Header sections

You can include a block of free-form text by wrapping it in HEADER and a line starting with .:

Destination Append temp.txt
Message TO:
FIELD FIRST NAME
FIELD LAST NAME
Header
Thank you for entering the Vernon XX race. The race
will be held Saturday, June 17 at the Vernon
High School. Race starts at 8:00am with registration
opening at 7:00am.

Please check that we have the right information for you:
.end of header
Message AGE:
FIELD AGE

Email participants

Instant Print cannot send email. The template parser (instprnt) does not support the EMAIL APIKEY command that SendGrid requires. The legacy SMTP path is deprecated and blocked.

Email is a listing-file workflow. The sample 5K race ships with ready-made templates:

ListingWhen to use
EmergencyEmail.4.G.lstUrgent broadcast to all participants
LiveEmailFinish.4.G.lstLive finish notification
PostRaceEmail.4.G.lstPost-race results (after Event to Database)

Setup requires %email_apikey% and %email_from% in Entries.INI. See the E-mail command reference for the full syntax.

RSClient behavior

On RSClient, the template file is fetched from the server automatically — you do not need to copy template files to each client machine. The output is printed on the client's local default printer.
